    General habit

Annual fleshy plant, much branched, dark green in colour, first erect and then ascending, reaching up to 1 m long. The whole plant is covered with tiny white and shiny papillates.

    Underground system

The root system is a taproot.

    Stem

The stem has a cylindrical section, slightly angular.

    Leaf

Leaves, fleshy, are alternate and simple, 1.5 to 10 cm long and 1 to 7 cm wide, without stipule. The petiole measures 1 to 2 cm long. The leaf blade is triangular oval, with wedged base, and more or less obtuse end.

    Flower

The flowers, green-yellowish in colour, are axillary, isolated or in pairs. The calyx is divided into 3 to 5 cornute lobes (usually 4). The number of stamens may vary (4 to 22). The ovary, divided into 5 to 8 loculus, is topped by a number of styles equivalent to the number of loculus.

    Fruit

The fruit is a conical or globular capsule (2.5 to 12.5 mm in length), dry, indehiscent, surrounded by the perianth tube extended by 3 to 5 horns, the tube that increases after fertilization. The general shape of the fruit is that of a whirligig; its total length about 1 cm.
