Description

Huperzia squarrosa is a rare tropical plant with small and green, needle-like leaves, making this plant look like the trailing version of a fir tree. Also known as tassel fern, this houseplant is an eye-catching choice for a hanging basket!

Huperzia squarrosa is native to the tropical parts of Africa, Polynesia, Australia and Asia. There, it grows hanging from rain forest tree limbs, forming curtains of fern-like foliage. Its stems can grow to an impressive length of up to 2.5 metres, with its leaves reaching around 1.3cm. Although its common name and look would suggest that this houseplant is a fern, it is, in fact, a member of the club moss family.

Like many clubmosses, Huperzia squarrosa requires relatively high humidity, bright indirect light and frequent watering to thrive. However, their roots should never be wet, only moist. This houseplant is a true delight for anyone willing to give extra attention, care as well as thorough research into the species.

Huperzia squarrosa enjoys a well-draining, airy substrate and seldom needs repotting. Propagation is only possible via spores, not cuttings. Huperzia requires high nitrogen fertilizer in order to thrive.

Huperzia squarrosa has been reclassified multiple times, so it is officially described as as Phlegmariurus squarrosus, but sometimes also found under the name Lycopodium squarrosum.
