Plant height 30-60 cm. Flower width 18-25 mm.
This attractive flower is a hybrid between the French Crane’s-bill (Geranium endressii) and the Pencilled Crane’s-bill (Geranium versicolor), both non-native species. The flowers are pink with five petals with a shallow cleft on the outer edge, and a fine tracery of purple veins. The leaves are palmate and five-lobed.
It flowers from May to September, and as a garden escape this perennial is usually found close to human habitation. Widespread in Britain, but casual.
George Claridge Druce (1850-1932) was an English botanist. Although he was a qualified pharmacist, his main interest was in botany, and in 1889 he was awarded an honorary M.A. by the University of Oxford.
Field notes: I have discovered this species in local woodland near gardens, and also along the local riverbank, which is quite a distance from any gardens.
