Plants herbs to unarmed shrubs or trees. Leaves odd-pinnate, often with more or less cup-shaped, sessile or stalked glands on the petioles and leaflet rachises. Inflorescences 1- many-flowered racemes; pedicels with 2 bracteoles near or above the middel. Sepals 5, imbricate; petals 5, yellow, often unequal; stamens usually 10, rarely only 4-5; anthers basifixed, longer than their short filaments, ciliolate along the lateral sutures, deshiscent by apical pores or short slits. Pods compressed, elastically dehiscent with twisting valves; seeds smooth or pitted, without areoles.
Chamaecrista includes about 250 species. It is pantropical in its distribution but most numerous in the New World. Some species extend into temperate regioins. There are 7 species known from Somaliland and Somalia.
