Plants herbs or small shrubs, with stellate hairs, sometimes intermixed with simple and/or glandular hairs. Leaves pinnately veined. Inflorescences axillary, cymes or solitary flowers, sometimes forming terminal panicles; bracteoles, if present, below the calyces. Calyces campanulate, 5-lobed; petals 5, often with lower margins inrolled, not persistent; stamens 5; filaments free or united at the base, often with membranous wings or tufts of hair on either side; anthers with attenuate-acuminate tips, usually ciliolate; staminodes absent; ovaries 5-celled, each cell with 1-many ovules; styles 1-5, more or less united. Fruits 5-valved capsules; seeds subreniform.
Hermannia includes about 170 species. Most are native to South Africa, but some are native in other parts of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, Mexico, and the Southern U.S.A. There are 5 species in Somaliland and Somalia.
