Plants trees or shrubs, rarely herbs, often armed with prockles. Leaves pinnately compound with 3 leaflets. Inflorescences axillary or terminal pseudoracemes, these usually pyramidal and with many flowers, often appearing when the plant is quite leafless. Corollas usually large, red or orange; banner petals much larger than the others. Pods usually leathery or woody, often greatly constricted between the seeds, 2-valved or opening only along the upper edge or apparently indehiscent; seeds 1-14, usually red, orange, or yellow; hila white or black.
Erythrina ncludes about 123 species. All are native to the tropics, there are more in the New World than the Old World. One species, Erythrina melanacantha, is known from both Somaliland and Somalia.
