Hawaiian Sunset Vine is a stunning plant with expressive gorgeous blooms. It’s one of the most beautiful tropical vines that aren’t that fussy – provided that the climate is warm enough. Learn about identification and care about this vine below.
Hawaiian Sunset Vine is a native of South Africa and Madagascar. Its dark green heart-shaped fleshy leaves grow up to 12 inches (30 cm) wide in the shade. The flowers with scented cup-shaped pink blooms emerge in clusters and are 2-3 inches (5-10 cm) across. Hawaiian Sunset Vine thrives in USDA zones 7-11.
The plant will grow well in full sun. However, in part shade it feels better, the leaves grow larger, and it blooms more.
Trimming the new leaves to keep the growth compact and neat is recommended, as it will encourage new flowering in leaf axils. Always cut above the bud and don’t leave long sections of dead stems – this will attract disease. The best time to prune is in winter and early spring before the new foliage appears.
Hawaiian Sunset Vine needs tropical and subtropical climates to thrive, but it can tolerate slight frost. If it was cold and your vine dropped leaves, don’t be scared – it will probably grow back from the roots.
Hawaiian Sunset Vine grows fast and needs a lot of space if grown outdoors or in a container. The first container should be around 7-10 gallons (26-37 liters). The plant needs a wooden trellis, and you need to train the branches around the trellis. Keep in mind that the pot should have good drainage.
