M. spicata variegata ‘Small Dole Mint’ (26)

c26.1

Source: Small Dole stall at Hampton Court 2000/2001

Ref: 26

This is one of the several mints listed as M. spicata although it has ovate rather than lanceolate leaves and deep venation. The green-white variegation is unstable as with the variegated peppermints. Single stems will produce variegated and non-variegated offshoots. The green non-variegated shoots never revert to variegation. The mint originated at the Small Dole Nursery and as far as I know came very close to been thrown away had the owner not noticed it and raised it to it’s current level of notoriety. It occasionally throws up totally white stems, which are clearly unable to survive since they are dependent upon the main plant for nourishment.
