Immunity Boosting Medicinal Plants of the Western Himalayas

Abstract

Plants are a valuable treasurer of nature and have abundant bioactive constituents with immunomodulatory properties. Arnebia is a critically endangered plant in the Himalayan regions and is utilised for the cure of several human ailments. This review focuses on the ethnopharmacological uses, distribution, pharmacology, phytochemistry, and conservation of Arnebia and propose the future research possibilities of the plant. The literature about the Arnebia species was gathered from scientific journals, books, and electronic data search (PubMed, Scopus, Elsevier, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Springer, Science Direct, Wiley). Arnebia species consist of several medicinally important phytoconstituents such as shikonin, arabinol, β-hydroxy isovaleryl shikonin, acetyl shikonin, teracryl shikonin, isovaleryl shikonin, and arnebiabinone which contribute to its abundant biological properties. Pharmacological research have established that Arnebia species showed antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antiviral, and anticancer effects. As a result, further study is required to comprehend the pharmacokinetics of the plant. The overuse of Arnebia species in pharmaceutical, food and textile sector has expedited its annihilation all over the world. Thus, the necessity of the hour is to conserve and propagate the Arnebia sp. with various agrotechniques in order to offer adequate raw materials for its commercial utilisation.
