Abstract

In 1753, Swedish botanist Carl von Linné, the founder scientist of plant taxonomy, established the genus Elymus for the first time in his book Species Plantarum. It contains six species: Elymus arenarius L., Elymus canadensis L., Elymus caput-medusae L., Elymus hystrix L., Elymus sibiricus L., and Elymus virginicus L. According to modern classification in Triticeae, Elymus arenarius L. should belong to the genus Leymus, and Elymus caput-medusae L. should be included in the genus Taenitherum Nevski. Linné (1753) does not specify which one is the type species of the genus Elymus. In 1933, C. A. Hebckий, the Soviet Union botanist, assigned Elymus arenarius L. as the type species of Elymus in his paper titled “study of agrostology IV: The tribe Hordeeae Benth’s system.” However, as early as in 1848, the German botanist, Christain Ferdinand Hochstetter, treated Elymus arenarius L. into a new genus Leymus. Thus, Elymus arenarius L. becomes Leymus arenarius (L.) Hochstetter. According to the principle of international botanical nomenclature III, the name of Elymus arenarius L. nominated by C. A. Hebckий is illegal. In 1976, the Soviet Union botanist H. H. Цвeлeв. designated Elymus sibiricus L. as the type species of the genus Elymus.
