Abstract
The thyroid gland is one of the important endocrine organs, which regulates many human body functions, either directly or indirectly. As a regulator for the whole body, its abnormalities should not be avoided, and preventive measures should be taken under consideration. Different kinds of Allopathic and Ayurvedic medicines are available for the same in the market, but Ayurvedic herbal preparations are preferred because it not only cures the problem, it also stimulates the immune system against different diseases. There are several herbal products identified to be potent for controlling thyroid hormone T4 and T3 levels. For prevention of hypothyroidism, herbal extracts need to supply adequate quantities of nutrients for the optimum production of thyroid hormones in the body. Similarly, for prevention of hyperthyroidism, herbal products or extracts need to supply nutrients which could control the excess production of these hormones. The chapter focuses on reviewing the available literatures on thyroid disorder including the experimental studies so far undertaken to highlight the therapeutic basis of Ayurvedic medicine for these endocrine gland–related disorders.
