Abstract
Vangueria madagascariensis (VM) (Rubiaceae) is a multipurpose tree in Africa, with height up to 15 m consumed for its edible fruits and for its varied medicinal uses. It occurs naturally in east and west Africa and it has multiple uses, including the fruits, seeds, oil, stem, bark, and leaves. VM fruits were investigated for their chemical composition, nutrient components, fibre, ash and, their seeds contain a high percentage of oil. The fruits showed that they have good quantities of protein with high amount of K, Na, Mg and Ca. As well as, they contain high percentages of carbohydrates. The VM seeds contain essential aminoacids e.g.lysine, cystine, valine, methionine, isoleucine, leucine, phenylalanine and threonine. The phytochemical screening of the plant revealed the presence of terpenoids, saponins, resins, glycosides and flavonoids. Vangueria madagascariensis fruits, leaves and seeds were reported to possess antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antidiabetic properties.
