- Broadleaf deciduous large shrub, erect, 6-10 ft (1.8-3 m) tall. Leaves alternate, pinnately compound, 17-25 leaflets, each 1.5-3.5 cm long, oblong to oblong-lanceolate, sharply serrate from near base, grayish green, green below, leaf rachis ("stem" to which leaflets attached) slightly winged. Flowers white, about 1 cm across, anthers brown, in clusters 4-8 cm wide. Fruit more of less spherical, 7 mm wide, white, stalks red.

- Hardy to USDA Zone 5 Native to central China. Introduced to the western world in 1910 by Ernest Wilson.
- koehneana: apparently in honor of the German botantist, Bernhard A. E. Koehne (1848-1918).
