Summary
Verbena species are prostate or decumbent herbs. Leaves decussate opposite, sessile, incised, dissected, pinnatifid or rarely entire. Inflorescence axillary, terminal spicate, pseudoumbellate or paniculate, pedunculate or sessile. Flowers sessile, zygomorphic, bracteate, Calyx, 5 toothed, 5 ribbed, Corolla hypocrateriform, 5 lobed. Stamens 4, didynamous, anthers ovoid, Ovary superior, 4 lobed, 4 loculed, 1 ovule in each locule, Style short, Stigma 2 lobed. Fruit schizocarp, enclosed by persistant calyx.

          Morphology
          Annual herbs about 10-40 cm tall. Stems decumbent as well as procumbent, rarely erect, pubescent, strigose, hairy slightly deflexed, acutely 4 angular. Leaves opposite, subsessile or sessile, triangular-cordate, or ovate, pinnatisect, 2-5 x 1.5-2.5 cm across, base acuminate, gradually narrowing, margin revolute, coarsely toothed with oblong to ovate divisions or 1-5, pinnatisect, apex acute, margin veins adaxially impressed. Inflorescence raceme spikes, 1-3 spikes, young inflorescence seems to dense, but fruits become looser and remote as they become mature, rachis minutely sessile to short stipitate-glandular, bracts linear lanceolate, shorter than the calyx, Flowers sessile, zygomorphic, Calyx 5 toothed, about 2 mm long, glandular pubescent, Corolla hypocrateriform 5 lobed, blue to violet, lobes unequal, glabrous, apex emarginated, Corolla tube 2-2.5 mm slightly longer than the calyx, stamens 4, didynamous, filaments filiform, inserted in the middle of the corolla tube, anthers ovoid, white, Ovary superior, entire or 4 lobed at the apex, 4 loculed, 1 ovule per locule, style short, stigma 2 lobed. Fruit schizocarp, splits open when ripe.
