It seems like the scientific names of plants are constantly changing; whether you agree with those changes or not, it’s important to understand why those changes happen and the research that goes into the study of plant taxonomy. Join Susan Fawcett, Research Botanist at the University and Jepson Herbaria, University of California, Berkeley, as she shares with us a fascinating dive into the family Thelypteridaceae.

“The Thelypteridaceae, numbering ca. 1200 species, is one of the largest and most taxonomically complex of all fern families, and its classification has often been controversial. A phylogenomic dataset representing more than half of known species diversity in combination with morphological study has resulted in an updated classification of the family. I’ll share some surprising insights on the biogeographic and evolutionary relationships among Thelypteridaceae with an emphasis on Hawaii and North America.”

This Zoom lecture is a free benefit for members of the Hardy Fern Foundation and the British Pteridological Society.
