Nutrient, fertilizer, and repotting needs for Blue Echeveria: repot after 2X growth

Most potting soils come with ample nutrients which plants use to produce new growth.

By the time your plant has depleted the nutrients in its soil itā€™s likely grown enough to need a larger pot anyway.

To replenish this plant's nutrients, repot your Blue Echeveria after it doubles in size or once a yearā€”whichever comes first.

šŸ¶ šŸˆ šŸ‘¶ Toxicity

Blue Echeveria is not known to cause harm to humans or pets. Regardless, if you, a family member, a cat, or dog has ingested any plant material, please consult a doctor or a veterinarian.

Blue Echeveria Toxicity to Dogs →

šŸ’Ø Humidity

Blue Echeveria enjoys lots of humidity. Provide humidity for your plant by watering regularly and thoroughly, since plants absorb most water through their root system rather than their leaves. They may also benefit from being placed next to a humidifier.

Blue Echeveria Humidity Needs →

šŸŖ“ Soil

Blue Echeveria is very sensitive to wet soil, so choose a potting soil that drains very well and doesnā€™t retain too much moisture. A good soil will have lots of perlite or vermiculite for drainage and some organic matter for nutrition. A few handfuls of perlite added to regular store-bought cactus soil will do the trick!

When and How to Successfully Repot Blue Echeveria →

šŸ’© Fertilizer

Blue Echeveria grows very slowly and doesnā€™t require added fertilizer. Replacing your plantā€™s potting soil once a year should provide them with more than enough nutrition. Remember, plants get their energy from sunlight, not fertilizer!

How Much and When to Fertilize Blue Echeveria →

ā„ļø Dormancy

Itā€™s common for Blue Echeveria to go dormant in the wintertime and you may notice their growth slow down. Waterings should be spaced out more during this time.

šŸŒŽ Native Region

Blue Echeveria is native to Central and northern South America.

šŸŒø Flowers

Blue Echeveria produces flowers in the wild, but does not flower when kept as houseplants.

ā¬†ļø ā¬‡ļø Growth Pattern

Blue Echeveria grows in a rosette pattern, with leaves neatly arranged in a circle. New growth will emerge from the center.

Blue Echeveria can be grown outdoors in USDA Hardiness Zones 10-12b. Find your local hardiness zone here.

šŸŒ± Propagation

Blue Echeveria can be propagated by the stem method. To propagate:

  • Make a cut just above the node. The node is the break in the stem where the leaf emerges.
  • To get the cutting to root, you can either:
    • Place the cutting in water until roots emerge and are ~2ā€ long and then transplant into well-draining soil, or
    • Place the cutting directly into well-draining soil and water when dry.

šŸ§ Troubleshooting

When troubleshooting a sad-looking houseplant, start by checking for signs of distress in its leaves, such as yellowing, browning, or drooping, which can indicate overwatering or nutrient deficiencies.

Inspect the soil moisture; too dry or too wet soil can cause problems.

Ensure the plant is getting the right amount of light, as too much or too little can stress it.

Finally, consider environmental factors like temperature and humidity, and adjust care routines accordingly to revive your plant.

šŸ˜– Common Issues

Overwatering is a likely cause of issues with Blue Echeveria. These plants are very sensitive to wet soil so if you notice your plant becoming squishy or translucent, overwatering is the likely culprit.

Cut your plant just past where the rot ends and allow it to callus over for a few days before replanting it in fresh, dry soil. Download Greg to make sure your plant never gets overwatered again!

I like how echeverias look, but they are the most fussy plants I swear. Water too much? Dead. Water too little? Dead. Not enough light? Dead. Too much light? Dead. This one Iā€™ve managed to keep alive for 2 years now, not sure how. Itā€™s nice to look at though :)

I was gifted this plant when it was on the brink of death so maybe thatā€™s why itā€™s given me problems ever since but after repotting him, his leaves started to grow and turn green again from originally being yellow and falling off.

Deceivingly tough plant to care for. Very high sun requirements - needs FULL sun. I live in Ohio where it is always overcast and I have had to add grow lights to supplement the lack of sun. Also do not try to fertilize if you donā€™t have an abundance of sun. I made that mistake and almost killed my babies. They are being rehabbed now.

These plants are super easy to take care of, and are almost impossible to kill! They can survive bright light or low light, and they only need to be watered every 2 months. 10/10 recommend for a beginner plant owner, or somebody who doesnā€™t have a lot of time on their hands to take care of plants, as this plant needs very little attention.
