Box Elder

Box Elder Maple, named for their similarities to both Boxwood and Elder plants, commonly occurs in Riparian areas, but is adaptable to both dry conditions and areas with temporary flooding. This fast growing and short lived native tree flowers early in spring and then drops samaras, seeds with wings, to the ground in Fall providing a food source for birds and mammals. Maples have high wildlife value, supporting almost 300 species of Lepidoptera.
