Costus scaber was perhaps the most widely grown member of the Costaceae (“Spiral Gingers”) in the US for decades. It is a reliable and cold hardy variety with tubular orange flowers that attract hummingbirds. This species is still grown and sold under the incorrect identification of Costus spicatus. C. spicatus may have recently entered cultivation but if so extremely rare and not in the public’s hands yet. The ‘Orange Indianhead Ginger’ of horticulture is this variety of Costus scaber offered here. In the garden in prefers a filtered sun location. Recent trials show this variety can handle full sun for most of the day as well.
Grows to 5’ in medium sun, cold hardy in USDA Zones 8 and higher.
