Rhus typhina
Most commonly known as Staghorn Sumac, this native deciduous shrub or small tree is the largest of the North American Sumacs. Known for the tiny red-brown hairs that cover new branches, similar to the velvet that covers the horns of male stags (hence the common name). Tiny yellow feathery panicles appear in late spring to early summer. Hairy red berries follow the pollinated female flowers in fall and persist into winter. The attractive green leaves turn shades of yellow, orange and red in fall.
Plant in full sun to part shade with dry to moist soil. Staghorn Sumac is an easy to grow shrub that spreads through root suckers to form colonies. An important food source for birds and other wildlife in fall when other food is scarce. Will tolerate drought, dry and rocky soils and is rabbit resistant.
A great choice to help with erosion control due to its strong root development. Plant in native gardens, naturalized areas and for stabilizing embankments. Garden companions include Asclepias, Baptisia, Symphyotrichum and Hamamelis.
Native to the Eastern United States.
