Summary[edit]

Description

Farm in the vicinity of Springbok, Namaqualand, Northern Cape, South Africa.

Hypertelis salsoloides or braksuring (brackish sorrel) in Afrikaans, is a short-lived succulent shrublet that grows to 30 cm. It branches from a single stem and has smooth blue-green erect cylindrical succulent leaves, 3 cm long, that feel rubbery to the touch. The flowers of Hypertelis salsoloides grow in sparse umbels on long erect stalks. They are white, pale pink or lilac with rounded petal lobes that hang down. The fragrant flowers exude a honey-scent. Five narrow oblong and pointed greenish sepals with scattered tiny red dots are noticeable below. When the sepals still clasp the closed bud it is pendulous; the flower only raising itself to an erect position upon opening. A spreading cluster of stamens with prominent yellow anthers tops the flower around the shorter style, tipped with a five-branched white or green stigma.

A second common name for the plant, skaapsuring (sheep sorrel), relates to the fact that the plant is heavily browsed by livestock, especially sheep, as well as game. The plant is found in the Little Karoo to Namibia, Zimbabwe and in tropical Africa. It grows in sandy or loamy soils and on granite slopes, often in disturbed sites. It copes with low rainfall.
