Fronds tufted, erect, dark green; stipe brown, 1.5–22 cm long, narrowly winged near apex, glabrous or with sparse brown multicellular hairs to 1.5 mm long; lamina ovate to lanceolate in outline, 4–24 × 2–14 cm, 3–4-pinnatifid; rachis narrowly winged in upper part of lamina; pinnae 14–20 on each side, shortly stalked, to 7 × 3 cm; pinnules to 13 on each side, to 1.7 × 0.5 cm; ultimate segments linear, to 0.3 mm wide, attenuate, glabrous on both surfaces

Moist forest where it occurs in dark and wet places such as deeply shaded stream banks, caves, under large rocks; terrestrial or less often lithophytic; may be locally common; 850–2000 m

Note
Many older specimens were named Trichomanes mandioccanum Raddi, which is an Asian species. Taton in Bull. Soc. Roy. Bot. Belg. 78: 37 (1946) states T. rigidum sensu Peter, F.D.-O.A.: 14 (1929) is not this taxon, but he does not say which taxon it represents.
