Garcinia cambogia or Garcinia gummi-gutta, locally known as Goraka, is popularly known for its medicinal properties that contribute to a range of health benefits such as weight loss, athletic performance, endurance and control of appetite. The health benefits are due to a natural chemical called hydroxycitric acid (HCA) present in the fruit rinds.
In Sri Lanka, Garcinia cambogia is a staple addition used in many curries to give it a tangy, sweet and sour flavour. The mini pumpkin-shaped fruits are harvested twice yearly, cleaned and dried naturally, resulting in black rinds. Garcinia cambogia is often recognised locally for its use in Ambulthiyal (Sour & Citrusy Tuna Fish recipe), a local delicacy from the southern coastal regions of Sri Lanka. Garcinia cambogia is also popular in juices, mocktails and cocktails.
