Etymology of Phragmites:
Gk. phragmites = growing in hedges, from phragma = a fence, hedge, from phrassein = to enclose. Dioscorides alluded to this name, mentioning that the tall stems were used for making hedges.

From the Latin Mauritanica / Mauritania the country in northwest Africa which is now Algeria and Morocco, and from where the 'moors' came from
