Etymology of Hypoxis:
Gk. hyp(o)- = beneath, less than; oxys = sharppointed, sour; alluding to the leaves, which are acid; ‘Quod folia sint acidula (Hypoxis)’.
Etymology of angustifolia:
From the Latin angustus = ‘narrow’; and folius = ‘leaf’.
