Etymology of Hibiscus:
Gk. hibiskos = name for the ‘marsh-mallow’ used by Virgil (Palmer), possibly derived from Gk. ibis = a stork that fed on some species of mallow.

Erect, prickly, perennial to 2.5 m. Leaves 3--5-palmate, coarsely toothed, on long prickly petioles. Flowers shortly pedicellate in terminal racemes, large, yellow with dark centre, epicalyx of 10--12 linear lobes, staminal tube to 20 mm long. Mainly Dec.--Apr. Forest margins and bush, SE (Plettenberg Bay to tropical Africa).
