Etymology of Habenaria:
La. habena = a strap or thong, reins; -aria = possessing; alluding to the orchid’s long spur, ‘from the long, strap-like divisions of the petals and lip’ (Willdenow, 1805).

Robust tuberous geophyte to 70 cm. Leaves many, cauline, lanceolate. Flowers in a fairly dense raceme, green and white, petals bipartite with anterior lobe elliptic, lip tripartite with spur 20--40 mm long, stigmas 2--4 mm long. Feb.--Apr. Seasonally damp grassland, LB, SE (Swellendam to N Province).
