Etymology of Gymnosporia:
Gk. gymnos = naked; spora = seed; referring to the seeds that remain attached and exposed when the fruits open. The seeds are exposed (naked) when capsules split open. Technically this is not 100 per cent correct, because the seeds have arils that enclose them totally or partially or are reduced to a rim at the base (G. tenuispina) (Marie Jordaan).
Etymology of harveyana:
From the English ‘harveyana’ / ‘Harvey’ meaning ‘commemorating a botanist of this name’
