Etymology of Euclea:
Gk. eukleia = fame, glory, from eu- = good; kleos = report; perhaps referring to the good quality ebony-type wood of some species or its beautiful evergreen foliage.

Dioecious shrub or tree to 12 m, red-velvety on the young parts. Leaves elliptic, leathery, rusty-velvety. Flowers in velvety axillary panicles, thinly hairy, deeply cleft, cream, ovary hairy. May--Jan. Bush and scrub, NW, SW, SE (Pakhuis Mts to Langebaan and Humansdorp to tropical Africa).
