Etymology of Coddia:
For Leslie Edward Wastell Codd (1908–1999), South African botanist and agriculturalist. He studied at the universities of Natal, Cambridge, Imperial College of Tropical Africa, Trinidad, and UNISA. He became director of the Botanical Research Institute in Pretoria from 1963–1973, published Trees and Shrubs of Kruger National Park (1951), authored over 160 publications, edited the journal Bothalia (1958–1974), described many new taxa, helped to found and became president of the South African Association of Botanists, amassed a collection of over 11 000 plant specimens, and co-authored with Mary Gunn the major biographical work Botanical Exploration of Southern Africa (1981).
