Narcissus poeticus

The pheasant???s eye narcissus, N. poeticus, is among the medieval species grown in Bonnefont Garden. Unlike the early-blooming daffodil, which blooms in March and April, N. poeticus blooms in April and May. It is this species, and not the daffodil, which is thought to be the narcissus of classical mythology. The story of the youth Narcissus, who was transfixed by the reflection of his own beauty and transformed into a flower, figures in many works of art and literature, including the most famous of medieval garden allegories, the Roman de la Rose.
