Henbane (<em>Hyoscyamus niger</em>) in flower

Like the mandrake, henbane has been exploited both for its anesthetic and its psychotropic properties. Although the fifteenth-century Herbarius Latinus recommended henbane for toothache, earache, and bruising, it also warned that it could destroy the memory and cause insanity. (Frank Anderson, German Herbals through 1500, 1984.)
