Conservation Status

Identifying Features

Black oak tree bark is dark gray-black, blocky, and furrowed.

The leaves are alternate and simple, 4 to 10 inches long, and have between 7 and 11 deeply pointed lobes. They are leathery and shiny green.

In the fall, the leaves turn dull red.

Habitat & Range

Black oak live in dry soils across most of the eastern half of the United States.

Life Cycle

The acorns of this tree have a shaggy bowl.
