This member of the Velloziaceae family was given
this name by Nanuza
Luiza de Menezes in 1971. It is found in
the heights of Namibia and South Africa, growing in a well drained
soil with some water and lots of sun. It is famous for standing
total dryness. The bulb will grow up to eight centimetres in
diameter, the whole plant will grow up to 25 centimetres height. The
flowers are pale pink.
The generic name is from the Greek xeros; 'arid', and phytos;
'plant' an allusion to its being drought-tolerant. The species name
means 'from Herero', Zimbabwe. |
