Elodea nuttallii

2. Elodea nuttallii (Planch.) St John (N-Am.) – A widely naturalised and rapidly increasing alien, recently apparently replacing Elodea canadensis locally. A fairly recent newcomer, first recorded in Belgium (and continental Europe) in 1939. Still rare and confined to the Kempen and the valley of river Schelde in the 1970’s (Van Rompaey & Delvosalle 1979). More recently much extending and now more or less widespread in Flanders (although less so in the western part). Still rare in Wallonia. Usually found in canals, river branches or ponds (including brackish water).

Obviously less vulnerable than Elodea canadensis and more resistant to eutrophication. Often considered to be a noxious environmental weed. Additional information on the invasive behaviour of Elodea nuttallii in Belgium is available at: http://ias.biodiversity.be/species/show/57.
