Doronicum hungaricum

Doronicum hungaricum
Doronicum hungaricum

Family asteraceae
Life cycle perennial
Flowers yellow (mid Spring)
Size 18"
Light sun-part shade
Seed ripenslate May

Not much information out there on this one; I couldn't even discern whether this was a perennial. From my own experience, I can now confirm that it survives zone 6 winters (at least the cold and snowy one we just had). Our second-year plants bloomed early May, from a fairly sparse-looking rosette and upright stems. I hope they get more substantial as they mature.

Flowers open during the day, close at night. This picture was taken early morning...

I even like the aftermath

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.
