Forsythia giraldiana - early forsythia

This particular Forsythia hasn’t been much grown in Finland. However, it is native to the mountainous areas of central China, the source of several plants suitable for Finnish conditions, so Mustila obtained a few plants from Latvia in spring 2006 and they have thrived so far.

Early forsythia, as the name implies, is one of the earliest of the genus to flower. The beautiful flowers - drooping, bell-shaped and bright yellow - open in early May. The long leaves are almost entire, contrasting with the more commonly grown Korean forsythia (F. ovata), whose leaves are roundish and toothed. In the wild in central and north-west China the species can reach 3 metres but it looks like remaining less than 2 metres high at Mustila.
