Description:
Perennials, culms to 80 cm high, erect; nodes glabrous. Leaves 15-40 x 0.5-1.2 cm, narrowed to the base, scabrid; sheath keeled; ligule membranous, 5-8 mm long. Panicle 10-30 cm long. Spikelets similar, pedicelled, 4 x 1 mm; lower glume 4 x 1.5 mm, not keeled, coriaceous, brown; upper glume smaller; lower floret empty, upper bisexual; first lemma 3.5 x 1.5 mm, hyaline; palea 2.5 x 1 mm, hyaline; second lemma 3 x 2 mm, ovate, shortly bifid at apex; awn 22 mm long; palea 1.2 mm, ovate, hyaline; stamens 3; anthers 2 mm long; ovary obovoid; styles 2, free; stigmas 2, plumose.
