The genus Hypericum, family Hypericaceae, includes some 400 species of herbaceous plants, shrubs and trees with a cosmopolitan distribution. Some species of the genus are: Hypericum revolutum, Hypericum canariense, Hypericum grandifolium, Hypericum calycinum, Hypericum olympicum, Hypericum polyphyllum, Hypericum roeperianum, Hypericum elatum, Hypericum fragile, Hypericum balearicum, Hypericum x inodorum. Common names: Curry bush, Forest primrose. This species is native to South Africa. They are fast-growing evergreen shrubs or small trees that reach 3 meters (9.84 feet) in height and width. The bright green, opposite, elliptical leaves give off a pleasant curry smell if crushed. They produce erect inflorescences filled with showy bright yellow flowers. They bloom in summer and autumn. They are used to fix slopes, to form shrub groups, for informal hedges, as isolated specimens and in pots for patios and terraces. Hypericum revolutum grows in full sun and semi-shade exposures. It resists light and occasional frosts. The soil can be normal, well-drained garden soil with coarse sand and plenty of organic matter. Water regularly so that the substrate never dries out completely (never flood). They do not resist drought. Fertilize at the end of winter with compost or manure. Lightly prune the tips of the branches in late winter to maintain a compact habit. They are plants resistant to the usual pests and diseases. They are easily propagated from seeds sown in spring, by semi-woody cuttings and by separation of basal suckers. |
