There are about 50 species in the genus Anthocleista, native mainly to tropical Africa, Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands. Anthocleista grandiflora is the only species in the genus that extends its distribution into southern Africa.

Anthocleista in the past has been more commonly placed under the family Loganiaceae.
