About 500 species, found worldwide in tropical and subtropical regions, with 70 species native to southern Africa, six species naturalised and an additional 23 species cultivated in the region. Differs from Convolvulus in not having stigma divided.

Ipomoea looks similar to Convolvulus but differs in not having the stigma linearly divided.
