The 500+ Varieties of Aloe Plants

Aloe Vera is only one variety of Aloe plant. There are 500+ varieties of Aloe, which are listed below. God only knows what other wonderful properties await to be discovered in all these different varieties. Mainly because there is no enthusiasm in the medical establishments to go and find out.

The most widely known species is Aloe vera, or "true aloe", and is cultivated as the standard source of "aloe vera" for assorted pharmaceutical purposes. Other species, such as Aloe ferox, also are cultivated or harvested from the wild for similar applications.

The APG III system (Angiosperm Phylogeny Group III system 2009) places the genus in the family Xanthorrhoeaceae, subfamily Asphodeloideae. The genus is native to tropical and southern Africa, Madagascar, Jordan, the Arabian Peninsula, and various islands in the Indian Ocean (Mauritius, Réunion, Comoros). A few species have also become naturalized in other regions (Mediterranean, India, Australia, North and South America)

This is a list of the species of the genus Aloe. As of February 2013, the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families accepts some 550 species.
