Stems terete, usually30-45cm in height, but some clones exceed 60cm,especially in rich soil. Leaves alternate, elliptic tolanceolate or ovate, 5-15cm long, glabrous. Flowersin clusters of two to four, about 2cm in length or a little less, white with greenish tips, slightly waistedjust below the middle, borne on longish peduncles pedicels. Most of Europe and Asia except the far north, in forests. A variable species in stature, leaf shape and size of flower. Rare in cultivation, most plants under this name being the similar but more vigorous P. X hybridum (multiflorum
odoratum).
