Leaves to 12cm wide or more, divided into five to seven lobes, more or less deeply toothed and subdivided. Inflorescence fairly compact. Flowers to 3cm across, varying in colour from bluish-violet to pink, white centred, also clear white (forma albiflorum). Most of Europe and northern Turkey in woods, grassland, scrub and hedgebanks. Divided into four subspecies caeruleatum, pseudosibiricum, rivulare (see G. rivulare) and sylvaticum (syn. alpestre) on differences in colour, hairiness and depth of leaf-division; also several varietal of cultivar names, based mainly on flower colour. Sun or shade. Most forms are rather large for the small rock garden.
