Caulescent annual, or biennial in the sense that late summer seedlings will over-winter before flowering. Life-cycle and hardiness as for E. cicutarium. To 50cm tall, but usually smaller. Leaves to 10cm, ovate, lobed, irregularly dentate, often crimson-veined. Flowers two to six, rich blue-violet, to 3cm across, usually smaller; petals fleeting. Seed beaks very long, to 10cm; unusual in having two seeds per mericarp. Low level and by sea. Sicily and Aegean islands in sandy grassland, in well drained soil in sun and attractive in leaf.
