ex Lindl. Evergreen shrub of low, arching habit, rarely above 60cm tall but spreading to 1.5m or more. Leaves obovate to ovate, 6-12mm long, deep lustrous green above, grey woolly beneath. Flowers solitary or in small clusters, 6-8mm wide, white, early summer. Fruits globose, glowing matt red, 6-8mm in diameter. Himalaya to south-western China, on mountain slopes. C.m. var. cochleatus is more neatly mat forming with somewhat broader less glossy leaves. A good large rock garden cotoneaster.
