Botanical Description

Clump to colony-forming, the slender stems usually 15-30cm tall but sometimes more. Basal leaves palmate, divided almost to the base into seven to nine lanceolate coarsely-toothed lobes. Flowerheads solitary or in twos or threes, 2-3cm across, white or pink or red-flushed, the bracteoles longer than the flowers, late summer. Pyrenees, Alps and Apennines, in mountain woods and meadows up to 1700m, mainly in acid soils.
