Botanical Description

perennial to 25cm tall, though often less. Basal leaves absent or solitary, trilobed with lobed and toothed segments; stem leaves in a whorl shortly beneath the flowers, like the basal but short-stalked. Flowers 1.5-2cm, solitary or paired, occasionally three to five, yellow, with five to eight petals. Woodland and scrub. Much of Europe except the islands and much of the Mediterranean region. A commonly cultivated species most frequently seen in the peat or woodland garden where it soon establishes increasing patches. A smaller, less invasive, form which has short rhizomes is localised in north-central Europe and is generally known as var. wockeana. The double-flowered clone, 'Flore Pleno', of the typical plant (subsp. ranunculoides) is a fine cultivar and is listed by various nurseries.
