Like A. pallens but stems 30-60cm tall, leaves channelled and flowers larger in loose umbels 3.5-7cm across. A.p. subsp. fuscum has greenish-brown to dirty white flowers (Romania to Greece). Subsp. euboicum, (syn. A. euboicum) has brownish to yellowish flowers, often with red streaks, eastern Greece). Subsp. villosulum has hairy leaf sheaths and brownish-pink to purple flowers, (Greece and Bulgaria).
